Co-Curricular Learning and Engagement

What is Co-Curricular Learning?

At Florida SouthWestern State College, co-curricular learning is an integral part of a student’s holistic development. Co-curricular learning includes educational experiences that occur outside of the traditional classroom but are intentionally designed to reinforce academic content, supplement classroom learning, and develop essential personal and professional skills. Co-curricular opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Service-learning opportunities,
  • Academic clubs,
  • Leadership programs,
  • Undergraduate research,
  • International education,
  • Civic-engagement activities,
  • Wellness initiatives,
  • Library and student engagement workshops,
  • Arts and culture programs.

Co-curricular learning provides students with the opportunity to actively deepen classroom knowledge. These activities are structured to enhance critical thinking, communication, and collaboration-skills that are aligned with the General Education philosophy at FSW. Students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, articulate personal growth, and integrate these insights into their academic and professional pursuits.

Co-Curricular Learning Helps Students Succeed

Florida SouthWestern State College believes in empowering students and transforming their lives in service to our community. Students who engage in co-curricular activities are more likely to feel connected to their college, persist in their academic goals, and achieve timely graduation. Co-curricular experiences serve FSW’s mission by offering avenues for students to engage meaningfully with the college community and the broader world.

Whether students are participating in a campus project, serving in student government, joining a student organization through Student Life, or completing a peer leadership program, these experiences build the capacity for lifelong learning and civic responsibility. To further support student development, FSW offers programs that formally integrate co-curricular experiences with academic learning. These include SLS 1515 Cornerstone Experience, and in the Associate in Arts Degree, IDS 2891 CREATIVE Capstone.

Just as academic coursework fosters discipline-specific knowledge and critical inquiry, co-curricular learning supports the development of desirable transferable skills such as leadership, intercultural competence, time management, and resilience.

Getting Involved

FSW is committed to creating accessible opportunities for co-curricular engagement. Bucs Corner, FSW’s student engagement platform, is the primary hub for discovering and tracking co-curricular involvement. Through Bucs Corner, students can browse a calendar of events, join clubs and organizations, register for workshops, and track their co-curricular transcript. This transcript can be used to demonstrate skills and competencies developed outside the classroom and can be a valuable tool in job and transfer applications.

Explore Bucs Corner to discover current events and opportunities!

Faculty, staff, Student Success Advisors, and the Student Life team are available to help students identify opportunities that align with their interests, academic goals, and career aspirations. Through intentional co-curricular involvement, students at Florida SouthWestern State College develop into well-rounded individuals ready to thrive in an interconnected world.
