The Emergency Medical Services Technology Programs are designed to prepare the student to become a competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and/or Paramedic. Studies include an introduction to the field of emergency medical services, including but not limited to the following: EMS operations, patient assessment, medical behavioral emergencies, obstetrics/gynecology, trauma, and emergency medical services for infants, children, and geriatrics.
Requirements for completion of the AS degree in Emergency Medical Services include Florida EMT certification and Florida Paramedic certification. Both the EMT and Paramedic certificate programs are limited admissions and require an additional application process in addition to college admissions. General Education requirements may be completed concurrently with career core requirements, or following successful Florida Paramedic Certification.
The EMS Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in conjunction with the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
This program articulates into the Edison State College Bachelor of Applied Science in Public Safety Administration. Students intending to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program are strongly encouraged to consult with the transferring institution regarding the choice of elective credit. EMS Bridge Credit-By-Exam Program:
This program is specifically designed to address those EMS students that have completed their Edison State College Paramedic Certificate under past catalog years, hold current Florida Certification as a paramedic, and are returning to the College to complete their Associate in Science Degree in EMS under a different catalog year. Following the guidelines indicated below, qualified students will be provided the opportunity to take a standardized comprehensive test for each remaining EMS course required under their new catalog entry year.
EMS Bridge Guidelines:
- The student must be currently enrolled at Edison State College, AS (Associate in Science) EMST, degree-seeking.
- The Student must have completed previous Paramedic Certification requirements at Edison State College under a prior catalog year and be required to readmit to the college.
- The student must demonstrate current certification as a Florida paramedic.
- All general education and elective credits, as indicated in the current catalog year, must be completed prior to the award of the AS EMST Degree.
EMS Bridge General Procedures:
- The student must submit an EMS-Bridge application to the Emergency Services Department Office located on the Lee campus. To obtain an application, students must schedule an appointment with the Emergency Services Program Director by calling 239-489-9392.
- The Emergency Services Program Office will advise the student, in writing, of application approval status. Upon approval, students will be charged a fee of $30 per examination. Approved applications will be submitted to the Edison State College Cashier’s Office for charges to be posted to the student’s account.
- Upon successful completion of the EMS Bridge Credit-By-Exam process, approved courses will be posted on the transcript with a grade of “S.”

The EMT and the Paramedic program have limited enrollment due to clinical facilities and accreditation standards.
